A 24-year-old woman has been charged with child abuse after her 6-week-old was hospitalized with injuries, including broken bones, according to the Owensboro Police Department.
According to OPD, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division were notified about the incident on December 23 by the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS).
Authorities said that detectives immediately initiated an investigation, and both parents were transported to the Owensboro Police Department for questioning. Officials said the child’s mother, Rachel Basham, of Owensboro, “admitted to intentionally inflicting harm on the infant, resulting in internal injuries and multiple broken bones.”
Basham has been charged with first-degree criminal abuse (child 12 or under).
The infant remains under medical care and is reported to be in serious condition, officials said.
