Later today, the local schools will be competing at Bowling Green High School in the KHSAA Region Two Swimming & Diving Championships, with their eyes on advancing to the first round of state.
Apollo enters the weekend with a young roster, who, for many, will be their first time swimming at regionals. They return some veterans who advanced to the first round of state a year ago and will be looking to make their return.
For Daviess County, Head Coach Megan Bevil has high expectations for both her boys’ and girls’ teams, especially the relay teams. The girls’ medley and 200 freestyle relay team of Alaina Mason, Ellie Girten, Ryleigh Bevil, and Grace Bullock, and the boys freestyle relay team of Caleb Sosh, Colton Cook, Caden Embry, and Mack Burton have been making waves all year. Bevil also hopes to see them advance to the first round of the state tournament as individuals.
She also has high hopes for the girls’ 400 freestyle relay team of Kyla Midkiff, Alexis Geiger, Faith Digiorgio, and Reed Burton to advance.
On the diving side, seventh grader Cole Taylor finished fifth at Regionals, and Reed Burton placed second on the girls’ side and punched her ticket to state.
“I believe various other swimmers on my team have a shot of pushing through, but they will need to show up and be ready to compete at a high level on Saturday,” Bevil said. “We have been training for this, but with such a long break off leading up to a big meet due to the snow, it is hard to anticipate the effect it will have on our kids.”
For Owensboro, Head Coach Sean Jackson wants the public to keep an eye on Ethan Lippert, Max Baur, Dawson Strobel, and Camden Johnson, who are all having excellent seasons. Jackson is also excited for Wade Harper, Sammy Johnson, Michael Swift, and Chloe Marie Aud to gain experience this weekend and expects them to grow and make some noise in 2027.
