A Daviess County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a two-vehicle crash late Saturday night at the intersection of East Fourth and Triplett streets, according to a media release from the DCSO.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:48 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, when a DCSO patrol vehicle collided with a 2007 Pontiac passenger car at the intersection, the release said. The driver and passenger of the Pontiac were transported by ambulance to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for treatment of possible injuries.
The DCSO deputy involved in the crash was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital by patrol vehicle and was also treated for possible injuries, according to the release. One person remains hospitalized. (Editor’s note: DCSO incorrectly included in the initial media release that all parties were released from the hospital, but has since confirmed they were incorrectly advised on the status of those treated. DCSO apologized for including inaccurate information in the original release.)
At the time of the collision, the deputy was responding to assist a Kentucky State Police trooper who was actively engaged in a foot pursuit involving multiple suspects, the release said. Those suspects had reportedly fled from a vehicle that KSP had been pursuing moments earlier.
According to the DCSO, the deputy was traveling southbound in the 300 block of Triplett Street with emergency lights and a siren activated as he approached East Fourth Street. The Pontiac was traveling eastbound on East Fourth Street when the vehicles collided in the intersection.
“This was an unfortunate situation, and I am relieved it wasn’t worse than it was. It is never our intention as law enforcement to cause damage or harm, and I am grateful to all the first responders, dispatcher,s and investigators who responded in various ways with professionalism and urgency to assist,” Sheriff Brad Youngman said in the release.
At the request of the DCSO, the Owensboro Police Department is investigating the crash due to a sheriff’s office vehicle being involved, according to the release. The roadway was closed for approximately 45 minutes while the scene was cleared.
In addition to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and Owensboro Police Department, the Owensboro Fire Department and AMR Ambulance Service also responded to the crash, the release said.
