The Klutch Barber Expo is set to return to the Owensboro Convention Center on March 15, bringing a full day of professional education, live competitions, and a growing roster of industry vendors for barbers, stylists, and grooming professionals.

Doors open at 8 a.m. with morning education sessions starting at 9 a.m., followed by the expo floor and competitions running into the evening.

Event organizer and Klutch Barber Co. owner Sean Ralston said the event is designed to offer both technical instruction and business insight for attendees seeking to elevate their craft and grow their personal brands.

“You can’t leave my class and be me, but I hope that you take something from me … and you can do what you do better,” Ralston said.

Ralston, who founded the expo after years of travel teaching and networking, said this second annual event expands on last year’s debut and reflects the shifting priorities of the industry.

“Education is really becoming more the draw for people,” he said. “That’s what we can bring … some of the best knowledge in the whole industry here.”

The morning session features four segments from a lineup of nationally recognized educators drawn from across the country. Among those scheduled to teach are David Falla, known for fundamental barber techniques; Andrew James, who will focus on longer cuts and styling; and social-media savvy barbers GetBeamed and DreClipperHands, who specialize in sharp lineups and eye-catching finishes. Ralston also highlighted Los Cut It, a recent National Barber of the Year, whose intricate designs and color work have set him apart in the industry.

“We share what we know,” Ralston said of the group’s philosophy. “We just hope that everybody that comes can take pieces from each of us and apply it to what they already do.”

After the education block, the expo floor opens with a wide variety of vendors showcasing hair products, tools, fashion items, and accessories. Attendees will be able to shop brands ranging from Babyliss Pro and Tomb45 to specialty apparel and barber gear, creating a marketplace as varied as the skills being taught.

While the show floor hums with activity, competitions will take place on stage throughout the afternoon. Barbers can register in four categories — including student fade, modern traditional, fast fade, and freestyle/total look — with winners taking home cash, prizes, and trophies. Ralston said the competition element adds excitement and a chance for participants to benchmark their skills.

“There will be competitions on stage so barbers can compete … and then we give out the awards,” he said.

For Ralston, the rapid growth of the expo reflects word-of-mouth enthusiasm among barbers who attended last year’s inaugural event.

“Everybody I talked to had a great time,” he said. “If you work in a barber shop and you loved it, the next year you tell your people you were with not to miss it.”

Ralston said he’s aiming to double attendance this year, drawing professionals not only from Kentucky but from out of state as well. He acknowledged that many local barbers may not yet be aware of the opportunities such events provide — especially those who aren’t deeply plugged into social media — and hopes the expo will broaden awareness of the industry’s potential.

Beyond technical skill, Ralston said the expo aims to help barbers build sustainable careers.

“Some of us just want to work behind the chair. Some of us want to do other stuff,” he said. “Ideally, you can take pieces of what we all bring and apply them to whatever it is that you’re trying to do.”

Ralston said his own path — from local barber to educator and expo organizer — illustrates the opportunities available to those willing to pursue them.

“It absolutely changed my career,” he said. “I would just challenge people to come and … see what you may learn that could change your career.”
