Letter to the Editor

If you enjoy singing choral music, don’t miss the opportunity to sing in Owensboro’s annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. Rehearsals begin at 6:30 p.m. on October 30 at Third Baptist Church, and continue each Thursday (except Thanksgiving Day) through the week leading up to the performance on Sunday, December 7.

Written by George Frederick Handel in 1741, the Messiah sets Scripture to music by telling the prophecy, passion, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Owensboro Choral Society began its annual tradition of singing Messiah on December 7, 1941. Story goes that the first performance was interrupted to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We’ve missed only two years — 2020 and 2021, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As a singer, you will also be supporting the work of the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro: a charity founded by late newspaper editor Lawrence W. Hager, Sr. Since 1916, Goodfellows has stepped up to provide clothing, shoes, and emergency dental care for Owensboro and Daviess County schoolchildren in grades K-12. We also serve ages 3-5, prior to kindergarten, for children enrolled in Head Start or public preschool.

Plan now to join dozens of singers — accompanied by orchestra, organ, and harpsichord — under the direction of Dr. Connie Ford. I’ve lost count of the many times I’ve sung in the chorus and look forward to it each year. It will be magnificent. I hope to see you there.
