Owensboro struggled to get much going in their season opener at Class 6A powerhouse St. X on Friday night, with the Red Devils falling 38-7.
The Tigers turned a pair of early OHS punts into quick scores for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Red Devils made a push to start the second quarter, with Ty Ashley recording an 8-yard sack to force a St. X punt. OHS started in Tiger territory, but a failed 4th-down conversion gave the ball back to St. X, which scored on a 44-yard pass for a 21-0 lead.
The Red Devils picked up a few first downs on the ensuing possession, getting to the red zone for the first time. After a holding penalty set them back on 3rd down, OHS again turned it over on downs.
The Tigers made a quick push for another score to take a 28-0 lead into the half, then went up 35-0 on the first possession of the third quarter.
Owensboro’s lone trip to the end zone came in the fourth quarter. Kalil Shemwell returned an interception to the 5-yard line, and Ashley carried it in off a direct snap to cut the deficit to 35-7.
The Tigers added a field goal with less than two minutes to play.
Owensboro quarterback Damarcus Ganaway Jr. finished 14-29 with 113 yards. Chadyn Morris led the receivers with 42 yards on three catches, while Kingston Dillard hauled in five catches for 39 yards. Evan Hampton led the ground attack with 15 rushes for 40 yards. Ashley had eight tackles.
The Red Devils (0-1) return home next week to take on reigning 3A state champion Christian Academy-Louisville.
