In a pair of city-county matches, Owensboro and Daviess County both came out on top.
Owensboro 3, Apollo 0
Lily Nieman scored twice and Nehema Mujinga had a pair of assists in the Lady Devils’ 3-0 win over Apollo. Amelia Calhoun added a goal, while Lilly Paige Early also had an assist. Starting in net, Ella Hall had two saves.
“We started the game slow, with Apollo packing the defense,” Owensboro Head Coach Sarah Poole said. “We scored twice in the first half and added another in the second half. We still have players out of position, but the girls are versatile and are making it work.”
Daviess County 4, Owensboro Catholic 2
Maddy Purcell had a goal and an assist to power the Lady Panthers past Owensboro Catholic 4-2. Bella Coombs, Mary Evelyn Wiman, and Bailey Brown all scored, while Fiona Baughn tallied an assist. Kaelin Labhart started in goal, finished with four saves.
“We looked a lot more comfortable tonight than we did in our first match-up with Catholic,” Daivess County Head Coach Paige Crisp said. “I thought we possessed the ball much better and were a lot more dangerous offensively. We cleaned up a lot of the defensive mistakes we were making several weeks ago. I was pleased that we were able to put four goals in the back of the net since finishing has been a struggle for us at times. I hate that we gave up the second goal with just a few minutes left, but overall, I’m proud of the girls and the improvements they’ve made so far this season.”
For Owensboro Catholic, Allie Marston scored twice, including a penalty kick, while Felicity Payne had 10 saves in goal.
“Our girls played with tons of effort,” Owensboro Catholic Head Coach Meg Patton said. “We have several things we need to tighten up as a whole that will change the game for us, but I was proud of the effort they showed tonight. Daviess County is a great team.”
