Last Thursday, at the annual meeting of the KHSAA, the KHSAA Delegate voted 168-52 in favor of Bylaw 6, allowing athletes who have participated in 20% or less of games played to transfer to another school with no penalty. Under the current rule, it applies a one-year penalty for ineligibility with any varsity participation without a minimum.
Some of the local coaches gave their thoughts on the announcement.
Natalie Payne, Daviess County girls’ basketball: I think it’s a step in the right direction. Ultimately, I feel it will change to the “One time Transfer,” rule, but it’s probably a good idea to take our time and amend the laws as we go.
Michael Robertson, Owensboro Catholic girls’ basketball: At least now, if you don’t play in enough games, you know you will be eligible without questions asked. I know there are rules in place now that are supposed to keep this from happening, but does it really?
Darren Lynam, McLean County baseball and boys’ basketball: I understand the spirit of the rule. It is to prevent a solid player on one team transferring to another for whatever the reason. Team up with other good players for a super team or disgruntlement with the current coach. I know some have talked about coaches intentionally playing guys 20% of the games just to keep them around. I would hope coaches wouldn’t do that. I think the rule is intended for those not seeing playing time at one place to be able to transfer to another place to get more playing time.
Neil Hayden, Daviess County boys’ basketball: I realize this may be a controversial topic to many. If/when implemented, hopefully, it is done carefully. It strikes s a middle ground by giving players and families with minimal opportunity the ability to transfer while maintaining some guardrails.
Jason Morris: Owensboro Catholic football: I think high school sports are an extracurricular that schools provide for their students. If a student wants to play, then they should be allowed to play for whatever high school their parents send them to.
