Apollo is moving on in the Class 5A football playoffs after earning a 19-7 home victory over Barren County on Friday night, using a mix of big plays and strong defense to secure the first-round win.
Both teams struggled offensively early, trading scoreless drives through the first quarter. The Eagles struck first early in the second quarter when quarterback Max Johnson hit Eli Williams for a 62-yard touchdown pass. Johnson saw Williams in single coverage and took advantage, lofting a deep ball that Williams hauled in for the score.
Barren County answered midway through the quarter with an 11-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:37 left in the half. The teams then exchanged failed fourth-down attempts deep in Apollo territory before the Eagles regained the lead late in the quarter. Quarterback JT Edge, who came in after Johnson left due to injury, connected with Landen Bratcher on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 3:14 remaining, though the extra point was no good, leaving the score 13-7.
The Trojan offense managed a few sustained drives in the second half but couldn’t find the end zone again, as Apollo’s defense held firm. Head coach John Edge said his team showed patience and discipline against Barren County’s methodical, run-heavy attack.
“Our defense played great tonight,” Edge said. “We only gave up seven points. They’ve scored a lot of points this year, but we gave up fewer than most teams have. That’s a really good team that runs a really good wing-T, and they’re very athletic.”
Edge said the key was not to panic when the Trojans moved the ball.
“We just had to be patient and read our keys,” he said. “I told the kids they’re going to get some yards — don’t freak out when that happens. Just play the next play, get them in second-and-long and third-and-long. They don’t like that. That’s not who they are.”
Apollo extended its lead late in the third quarter with a highlight-reel catch from Williams. With two defenders closing in, he leapt, snagged the ball one-handed, and pulled it down as he fell backward in the end zone. The two-point attempt failed, but the score pushed the margin to 19-7, where it stayed the rest of the way.
Apollo will travel to Bowling Green next week to face the Purples, who defeated Graves County 42-0 in their first-round matchup.
“We’ve got as good a chance as anybody,” Edge said. “We just have to come with the mindset that we’re going to win the ballgame.”
