Basketball fans in Owensboro are in for a rare treat this week as the nationally renowned Grind Session circuit brings elite high school talent to town for the first time — highlighted by a marquee matchup Thursday night between two of the country’s top boys programs.
Prolific Prep (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), the ESPN No. 1 team in the nation, will face off against No. 7 Southeastern Prep Academy (Orlando, Fla.) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at the Owensboro Sportscenter. The release said Grind Session, now in its 10th season, is the longest-running winter circuit for elite high school basketball programs across North America. This week’s event in Owensboro will feature 20 games between 22 men’s and women’s teams from 10 states and Canada.
In total, 17 boys teams and five girls teams are participating — including top programs such as Huntington Expression Prep (WV), DME Academy (FL), Academy of Central Florida, Hamilton Heights Christian (TN), and Fort Erie (Canada).
The Owensboro Sportscenter will host games Thursday through Sunday, while Paducah Tilghman High School will host two games on Saturday.
Locally, five Kentucky boys teams are on the schedule: Hopkins County Central, Henderson County, Daviess County, Hopkinsville, and Mayfield. Daviess County will play at 7:15 p.m. Friday against Albuquerque Prep, a top-ranked team from New Mexico.
“We are excited to foster what will be an ongoing relationship with the city of Owensboro to bring elite level basketball to the city,” said Dan Hudson, Director of Operations for The Grind Session. “We know what basketball means to Kentucky and we know that the community will do an excellent job in supporting these events.”
The circuit has a proven track record of producing future NBA talent. More than 3,000 Grind Session alumni have gone on to play college basketball, with nearly 100 reaching the NBA. Recent alumni include Jamal Murray, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum, Paolo Banchero, and Tyrese Maxey.
“We are excited to play host to such an elite basketball event that is bringing in the next generation of collegiate and professional talent,” said Lucas Daunhauer with Visit Owensboro. “There is a lot of buzz in the basketball community around this week’s matchups and we know Owensboro and the Sportscenter are the perfect stage.”
